The United Nations Committee on Interstellar Objects (UNCIO) is not a real United Nations body, but a fictional concept recently detailed in an article by Harvard Professor Avi Loeb. The proposal was published in a Medium article on September 30, 2025, and suggests a framework for an international body to coordinate the scientific study of interstellar objects (ISOs).
This proposal is distinct from the real UN Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA) and its subsidiary, the Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (COPUOS), which currently manage international space affairs.
Key aspects of the fictional UNCIO proposal
According to the proposal, the UNCIO would have the following features:
